The Waiting Room

We’ve all found ourselves there. The walls are a neutral color, the chairs are uncomfortably familiar, and the clock on the wall seems to tick with a peculiar, slow-motion rhythm. This is the Waiting Room. It’s not a physical place, but a spiritual season—a prolonged pause between the prayer we uttered and the answer we have yet to see.
In this space, tension is our constant companion. We feel the ache of the “not yet,” the silence that follows our “how long, O Lord?” It’s a season that can breed anxiety, doubt, and a desperate desire to force a door open ourselves. We question if God has forgotten us, if our file has been lost, if the promise was ever real to begin with. The waiting room magnifies our lack of control, and that can be terrifying.
Yet, if we look with eyes of faith, we see that the waiting room is not a punishment; it is God’s preparation room. It is in the quiet, in-between spaces that the deepest, most crucial work of our hearts is done. Growth happens here, underground and unseen.
While we wait for an external change, God is orchestrating an internal transformation. He is teaching our hands to release their white-knuckled grip on our timelines and our plans. He is strengthening the muscles of our trust, not by immediately giving us what we want, but by faithfully giving us what we need: more of Himself. In the absence of action, we learn the profound difference between passive waiting and active trusting. Active trust chooses to believe in the character of an unseen God when the circumstances remain unclear.
The Bible is filled with people who knew the waiting room intimately. Abraham and Sarah waited decades for a son. Joseph waited in a pit and a prison for a promise. The Israelites wandered 40 years for a journey that should have taken weeks. And in the fullness of time, God moved. Not a moment early, not a moment late. His timing was, and always is, perfect.
Your waiting is not evidence of God’s absence; it is the very canvas upon which His faithfulness can be most brilliantly displayed. The delay is not a denial. It is divine orchestration.
So, if you find yourself in the waiting room today, take heart. Take a deep breath and listen. Listen for His voice in the silence. Look for His provision in the wilderness. This season is not wasted. He is using it to root you deeper in His love, to purify your desires, and to prepare you for what is to come.
Choose to trust not just that He will act, but that He is good while you wait. Rest in the truth that the One who holds time itself also holds you. His clock is never slow. His plan is never late. Wait on Him, for your hope is in a God who is always worth waiting for.
“Wait for the Lord; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the Lord!” – Psalm 27:14
